How It Works

An each-way bet is two bets of the same stake: one on your selection to win and one on it to place. The place part pays a fraction of the win odds, set by the bookmaker's place terms.

Example: 10 each way at 10/1 (11.0) with 1/4 the odds costs 20. The place odds are 1 + 10 × 1/4 = 3.50. If it wins, both parts pay: 110 + 35 = 145 back. If it only places, the win part loses and the place part pays 35 back, a 15 profit. If it misses, you lose 20.

What Is an Each-Way Bet in Football?

Each-way betting comes from horse racing, but in football it is used on outright markets: who wins the league, the top scorer, the tournament winner, or who finishes in the top four. The win part pays if your pick finishes first; the place part pays if it finishes in one of the paid places, for example the top two or three.

Because you pay for two bets, an each-way bet only makes sense at longer odds. At short odds, a place alone often returns less than your total stake, and the calculator tells you when that is the case.

Place Terms and Dead Heats

Place terms are written as a fraction and a number of places, such as “1/4 odds, top 3”. The fraction sets the place odds; the number of places sets how often the place part pays. Better terms are a higher fraction or more places.

A dead heat happens when players or teams tie for the last paid place, which is common in top scorer markets. The place stake is then divided by the number of tied selections. Pick the tie in the calculator to see the reduced return.
